Mom eating breakfast in Chennai, India

Wanted to share with you a picture of my mom who arrived in Chennai, India this evening, which was 3:30 a.m. local time.

She is there on a mission trip for the next two weeks.  She will be visiting missionary friends who work with a local Bible College there as well as churches in several of the villages.

She'll also do some traveling and will fly home from Delhi.

For those of you who are folks of faith and are prayers, I'd appreciate any prayers you might say for her safety and well being while she is away.  Prayers also that the group would bring encouragement to those with whom they will be visiting.

Thanks all!
Mrs. White

Ruby :)

This dog is the love of my life and is currently recovering from her second knee surgery in 1 week. which is absolutely heartbreaking to see her in so much pain. Its amazing how much of an affect a dog can have on your family and how devistating its loss can be. Ive had her since i was in the 6th grade when my parents made me transfer schools in the middle of the year, i was devistated and i just remember coming home everyday after school and holding her and crying about how i just wanted to go back to my old school, its amazing how much you go through with your pet. She will always have a huge part of my heart !

Maddie :)

Words cant even explain how much this little girl means to me! every summer i go live in atlanta to be her nanny. She was adopted and struggles with alot of emotional damage and since she has no siblings she thinks of me as her older sister and its had such a huge impact on my life. A ten year old girl has taught me so much about myself and just finding the good in any situation. She has the prettiest soul then any person i know and i wish i could spend more time with her.

My life the past month.

Well this first month of school has been a complete domino effect of stressors and one of my biggest by far was i got evicted from my house in only 10 days!!! i had a birthday party and my landlord ended up showing up and video taping the party and didnt even give us a second chance and there was no damage done or anything. I still havent talked to him physically since  the night of my party and hopefully never will. Now im happily in a 2 bedroom on shamrock and i couldnt be happier. It has been a struggle everyday but slowly but surely me and my roomie are getting it together!

The two reasons I chose my career path

Everyone has their certain reasons as to why they chose the career path that they did. I have two amazing reasons that I picked to be a Recreational Therapist with a minor in Special Education and their names are Michael and Jessie! Michael is a boy with Down's syndrome.  I met Michael when I was 10 and I still remember him like it was yesterday.  He was the first kid I ever taught to play soccer.  Jessie is my beautiful cousin.  I have loved her with all of my heart since forever! Jessie was born with Cerebral Palsy and is unable to walk, talk or feed herself.  She is very much responsive and she knows exactly what she wants.  You ask her a question and her face lights up.  Being around these two amazing individuals changed my life forever. These two helped me choose what I wanted to do and I can never tank them enough for the amazing impact they have had and continue to have on my life!

My Roommates!

The thing I have come to accept in the Special Education is everyone's learning styles, personalities and all around being is different.  Not one person is the exact same.  I have come to notice this even more not just in the classroom but also outside of the class room.  I live in a house with 3 other girls and we are all so different in so many ways.  The first one is Hillary.  Hillary is the most laid back person you will ever meet.  Nothing phases this girl besides sports.  The only time I see her worked up is when she is playing basketball or volleyball.  She is one of the smartest people I know. She was valedictorian at her high school and is now studying to be an Occupational Therapist.  The second one is Jenna.  Jenna is also extremely smart and works really hard.  She is involved in just about everything.  The girl never takes a break.  She also plays volleyball with Hill and is studying Criminal Justice.  Last but not least is Krista.  Krista is completely different.  She is very hard working, very involved and unbelievably clumsy! She is also crazy smart and loves school.  I have been best friends with her since high school and she has been the same since day one.  She is hopeless romantic with a range of emotions.  She is studying pre-med biology.  We are all so different but we have some of the same qualities.  We are all great friends and I couldn't have asked for better people in my life! :)

About me

Hey everyone! Sorry I'm behind on the blog but my name is Emily Lowe and I'm a senior majoring in speech therapy. I'm from Richmond and I'm super close with my family. In the picture above is me with my 11 year old sister Martha, she's my little baby! Speech therapy has been a passion of mine ever since my Dad was diagnosed with throat cancer my sophomore year of high school. He had to re learn how to swallow properly and talk. After getting to know the therapist that worked with him really made me want to work in the speech therapy field one day. So that's a little bit about me, I'm really enjoying the class so far!

My two favorite things :Fall and family.
This was a unique communication setting for me because this was my cousin Ella's first real exposure to fall and Halloween. She was learning lots of new words at the pumpkin patch like "corn maze", "pumpkin patch", "apple cider", and "apple orchard". It was interesting to see how she said those words and her learning process through it.

My Mom

My mom is my favorite person in the world is my Mom.  She is the person I always go to for advice and I tell her everything.  Some kids are embarrassed by their parents but I never have been.  She was always the "cool mom" as my friends would say and always gave me a great amount of freedom.  This is something I feel like is very key in parenting because if you are too strict on your kids, they will rebel.  I never really did any of that because she always trusted me and I never wanted to disappoint her.  She's the strongest person I know being a single parent and I know raising me hasn't been easy and for that, I admire her so much.

Music

As stated before I love music! Over the past years I have seen more than 30 bands in concert, and I keep adding to the list! I go to as many concerts as I can, and Just this year have been to warped tour, secondhand serenade,ZZ Top, Anberlin, Brand New, and next weekend A Day to Remember (who is my favorite, and will be my 5th time) who is also playing with All time low and pierce the veil. I'm not sure if any of you know any of these bands, but they are all great. I listen to almost every type of music and am slowly crossing off each band to see on my bucket list.

This summer..

I volunteered with the Madison County Special Olympics and I got to help train the track and field athletes to prepare them! I was stationed in Olympic town however, and did not get to watch all of them compete, but many of our athletes brought home gold and silver! It was a great experience. One my friends and I's favorite athletes was this young man. His mom is amazing and has him involved in almost every sport and activity! I volunteer with bowling now and other things when I do not have work (which unfortunately is not very often anymore).

Test1

What did you think of the first test?  I found some questions to be difficult.
A few I could not remember from class. Thought I'd see what everyone else thought.
Have a great week!

AXL

This dog is by far one of the coolest dogs in the world. I've had him since he was a puppy and he literally loves anyone who he sees. I still wish he was just the little puppy he once was but he is still the man.

Fall

It is officially my favorite time of the year. You know the weather is perfect whenever you can wear shorts and a sweatshirt and be perfectly comfortable. The best part of this time of year is deer season and I look forward to bow season as much as Christmas. Heres one reason why...

Observations

During my time in the classroom so far this year, I have noticed many things and had the opportunity to see a diverse group of children. I am at Madison Middle in a 6th and 7th grade special education classroom, but I am in a collaboration setting for the majority of the day. All the students have a ton of personality and it's nice to see them develop everyday.

Coaching

This month I started as  an assistant coach on the Centre College softball team. I have played baseball since I was 5 years old and have been carrying a bat since I could walk. The transition from baseball to softball is taking me a little while to fully wrap my head around but I look forward to learning more about it.The head coach is someone I have gotten to know in the past year due to my younger sister moving to Boyle County where his daughter goes to school, and he is also a football coach and teacher. The minute he offered me the job I took it. It has been a blast.

Berea Parks and Rec Backyard Games!

This week I got the privilege to work with the Berea Parks and Recreation's event called Backyard Games! The Backyard Games were much like Special Olympics but on a much smaller scale.  This event was free to the public and was strictly for those with disabilities.  It was one of the most amazing things I have ever done. I had so much fun! We played parachute games, Frisbee, blew bubbles, played 4 square and sharks n' minnows all night.  It was such a rewarding activity.  I love my parks and rec major! I am so lucky to be able to work with such amazing people like these kids! :)

Iphone 5c

Last week, I upgraded from an iphone 4 to the new iphone 5C. Let me tell you, this was the best decision I have made in weeks. The iphone 5 is a little bigger than the 4 and produces a more clear screen. It is faster, connects to more effective 3g networking, has a camera that actually focuses. I don't know about you, but with my iphone 4 I could never take a clear picture. The photos always had some kind of blur to them. Not only are the actions better, but the look itself. I ordered the pink version, but it is really a more choral color. This was a great deal for only $100 with the upgrade. If there's one thing I like more than a new phone, it's saving money.

Changes in routine resulting in changes in behavior

I work for a school's after care program and pretty much kids stay the same in regards to behavior. The typical "bad" kids misbehave daily and the typical "good" kids rarely act up. On Thursday one of our regulars missed after care for a follow up surgery appointment which disrupted his whole schedule. On Friday when he came to aftercare he misbehaved greatly which is odd for him. He wasn't listening  or following directions. I think this is a good example of how changes in routine affect behavior and as educators we should be aware that sometimes there is more going on than meets the eye and we should be patient.

Life Proof Cases!

So, I finally was brave enough to actually try the LifeProof case with my iPhone and it worked!! I captured this awesome picture of my little cousin. How precious is he?!

ALC

My Sophomore year cheerleading at Alice Lloyd College. I loved it!

My life as a coach

This past summer I took a new job at Andy's Gymnastics in Irvine. I am a gymnastics and cheerleading coach. I absolutely love it! I am reassured every day at work why I want to be a teacher, and why I'm so excited about it! The kids look on their face when they master a new flip, or stick a new stunt is so amazing. I relate that to the look on a students face when they master a new concept and knowing you're the one that helped them along the way.
Anyway, our first cheerleading competition is the first weekend in October, and my girls are SO excited! We all have hotel rooms in Louisville and that is all they've talked about. We also ordered them new uniforms (they've had the same ones for four years!) and they can't wait to see them. Our colors are royal blue, lime green, and white....with a hint of glitter and sparkles!! The uniforms are adorable, I'll have to post a picture of them when we let the girls see them! They have rhinestones all over them! Sooooo cute!
I am so thankful for this job, and I love my girls so much! GO CATS!

Operation Christmas Child

I'm sure most of you have heard of Operation Christmas Child, but if not, I'll share some interesting things about it. Every year my church is a relay center for Operation Christmas Child, but this year, I have a bigger role to play in it. A few months ago I was asked to be a Youth leader for our Youth Group and of course, I accepted. We, as a Youth group, were asked to head up and lead the OCC this year. We started by making boxes that are free to the community so they can fill them up with things that the kids in other countries may need such as, hygiene items, toys, pencils, paper, etc. We then go around town and hang up signs advertising OCC. At the end of October our Youth will attend other churches giving presentations and explaining more about OCC. On a Saturday in November we will meet at our church and collect the boxes that the other churches have collected, then load them up and take them to Lexington to the next relay center. Last year, our small community collected over 400 boxes for OCC. That is amazing!! This year, our goal is at least 500!

Operation Christmas Child is an organization set up to reach children across the world. Like I mentioned earlier, the boxes are filled with things they need, as well as toys and such that they would enjoy. Most children have never heard of Jesus, or Christmas. And with these simple boxes those children are opened up to the Love of Christ and hearing all about Him. The videos we watch show their faces when they open up a box, and it is simply amazing. I encourage each of you to participate in OCC if you are ever given the chance. If you'd like to make a box and don't have anywhere to take it, I'd be more than happy to take it with me, and add them to our church collection. It is such a blessing.
Also, a great idea is to make a box in a clear container. I've been told that after they take their stuff out of the box they use the clear container to go get water and carry it back and forth.

This experience has touched my life in many ways, and I really love to watch God work through His Youth.

Crazy Week!

I hope that each of you have had a good week and have benefitted from the Reading Response assignment this week. I'm anxious to read these to see the connections you make and the new learning that occurred.

This week has been crazy for me as including three straight nights in different cities in different hotels.  I attended a very interesting conference in Boston on student learning objectives and gained excellent resources to use in my work with the new Professional Growth & Effectiveness System Kentucky is developing.  It will replace the current district by district evaluation system of teachers.

My flight out of Boston was delayed and thus re-routed from D.C. to Charlotte.  There I missed my flight and ended up having to spend the night.  The following day I drove to Bowling Green where I had the opportunity to share the new PGES system with a group of district leaders from across the state. Great meeting.  I love to hear from those currently working in the schools and districts.

Needless to say by evening and arriving home I was exhausted.  But, I had/have the opportunity to have my 2 and 3 year old great-grand daughters spend the night and part of the weekend.  You'll get to benefit from their "natural language" exchanges over the course of the semester!

Eventful weeks remind me of the many opportunities I've been given and thus the blessings I have.  I'm excited for Monday night and the opportunity to do the following:
  1. Review the MLU and give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you remember.
  2. Review the theories of language acquisition
  3. Connect our learning on syntax, semantics and pragmatics to the early school years and literacy (chapter 6)
I look forward to seeing each of you on Monday!  An optional activity if you have time and access to a library where you can locate it is to bring a copy of a favorite children's book.  I'll have plenty for us to use in our work.

Camp activities

This summer I had one of the best jobs you can have.  I was a summer camp counselor through Lexington Park and Rec for many of their camps such as therapeutic recreation, camp kearney, dance, and art camp.  I met a lot of really awesome people, made some amazing friends and go to do fun activities!  We did things such as canoeing, fishing, sling shots, archery, battle ball, carpet ball, and much more.  I had a lot of fun and it was an amazing experience. This picture above shows me and my co workers at camp kearney showing off our fun activities.

Speech and Language

Until just recently, I never realized how much my own vocabulary affects the children I am around.  Not only what I say but how I say things are conveyed in a big way to the children I am caring for, and can affect the way they say them to their friends.  Having younger siblings, this is very hard because I talk differently at home then when in a school or at my job.  Hearing them repeat things I say to my older family or even my friends is not always a good thing.  Especially this summer, I realized how true form of imitation is while working at the daycare.  Children will hear another child say a word they know they should not be saying and repeat it over and over just because they know they are not allowed to.  Setting a good example of what I say and how I say it is one main priority of mine now.  While at work, instead of yelling at a child who was doing something wrong, our policy was to use our manners, just as they should be to us.  While the adults said, "no thank you," "yes ma'am," "yes sir" to the kids, it helped take after us and repeat it back.

Videos

Even though I do not plan in pursuing a career in infants and toddlers, I do enjoy working with them and especially seeing them do cute and funny things.  The videos we have been watching in class are absolutely adorable.  I worked at a daycare this summer and can recall many similar situations to these videos and it instantly just puts a smile on my face.  Although one day I will be working with older children, I still enjoy seeing a baby laugh every now and then :)

My Family

My parents have been divorced since I was a baby and my dad remarried when I was 6.  Him and my step-mom have 5 children together, therefore making me the oldest.  I have a 12 year old sister(Isabella), 8 year old twins (Grayson & Susanna), 4 year old brother (Graham) and a 6 month old brother (Jack Hudson).  Going from an only child to suddenly the oldest of 6 was a big adjustment but I wouldn't have it any other way.  I'm thankful for the opportunity to serve as not only a big sister, but a role model for them.  Of course I am biased but they are all the most adorable, sweetest kids I could ever even imagine and I am so thankful for every single second I get to spend with them.

Loving this class!

I was broken hearted when I first realized that I wouldn't be able to go into speech therapy because I can't get my grades where they needed to be. Then I realized that what I wanted to do with that was to help children with communication anyways. I have changed my major to IECE, and I believe I am absolutely going to love it! I love coming to this class every Monday even though I have an hour and a half drive to and from. I really appreciate all of the reviews and that Mrs. White ensures that we are grasping all of the information. I have had so many instructors that like to zoom through the content and give tests.... I am still excited about this class and my future in IECE!!!!!!!

Gallaudet University (ASL)

In my American Sign Language class, we recently covered a review over Gallaudet Univeristy. Even though I don't consider being deaf in the same caterogy as special educaiton, I thought I would share this link and story on the fact that it is a type of language and communication. This story is very encouraging and interesting. It deplicts the struggles these students faced and overcame. Hope some of you enjoy it as much as I did.

Cute Baby Videos

I really enjoyed watching all of the videos of the cute babies yesterday, it was just another validation that I have chosen the right career path because I love children. I find language development really interesting and I loved seeing all of the changes from video to video. I also thought it was super neat to see the toddlers using ASL, they were so refined and understood what they were signing. I am currently in ASL so I liked seeing that connection. It was also interesting to me to see where the triplets I babysit for are developmentally with language. They are about one and a half and I could definitely see some traits in their language from the videos and the power point. I love how this class is making me look deeper into my own life and how I can find examples of language development in my everyday life.

The Trouble with Blogging..

Well, I've realized the blogging life is not for me, or at least blogging on Mondays. There's something about Mondays that make one bad thing blow up into a million more. I call it "Monday Syndrome." I would've posted earlier but that's another story.. (BIG shout out to Ms. White for helping me out).. Anyways, I thought tonight's reviews were very helpful. I also enjoyed the videos. I find it very interesting to analyze and break down the language of the children. This is something I see or hear in everyday life yet I look over the stages of development because the dialect or sounds are familiar and are placed in the norm. This class is very important in the realm of special education. It pinpoints the development of language and communication that some classes skip over. Looking forward to more funny videos!!

-B
I love animals of all kinds, but especially my dog and my cat.  They are my life and can always find a way to brighten my day.

It was really cool learning about the 0-3 month olds because my baby sister just turned 3 months old.  It was neat learning about how they communicate and seeing that first hand with my sister.

My role in language devlopment

While working on my reading response I realized how big of an impact I have on language development in children, even now as a sophomore in college. I work as an aftercare worker and I am a babysitter. I never realized how much my language and vocabulary affects the children I care for. What I say affects how they use and view words and sounds. I already have noticed the three year olds at aftercare repeating what I say. As a discipline measure, if a child does something wrong and is continuing to do it after I tell them not to I count to three. Now the three year olds also count to three when other children are doing something wrong. I think this is a good example of behaviorism and imitating someone's speech, but it is also an example of how my language affects the children I am around daily. I also now realize how I use the social interactionist perspective by altering my speech to fit the children I am talking to. I pause, I wait, I ask open  ended questions, all so they understand me better and learn. Now that I have more of an awareness of this, I think I will try my best to offer a language rich environment for better language development.
This semester I am taking many recreation classes as well as psychology and this special education class.  In my REC 200 class we are learning about leisure in general and recently we are learning about leisure and recreation here in Richmond.  We did presentations on sites and parks here in Richmond and what you can do there.  In REC 411 we go to the Morning Pointe nursing home every Monday and are paired with a senior in the Buddy class and get to know them on a deeper level and give them something to do and someone to talk about.  In REC 350 our big project is the employee development manual.  We have to pick a company and find out information on that company in detail.  In REC 263, since it is a field work class, we have to observe for 90 hours and make sure that we plan at least 5 recreation events.  In PSY 280 we are learning about the development of people using Piaget.  Finally, I am taking SED 260 and we are learning about morphemes in more detail.  I enjoy all of my classes, but I am definitely busy all the time and I am challenged.
I work for Lexington Park and Recreation in their Therapeutic Recreation department.  I work their four times a week and I absolutely love it.  On Tuesdays I work with the adults with special needs playing baseball in Miracle League and our team is called the "Thunder Pucks."  I absolutely enjoy this and I love seeing the different personalities that come out when they are playing baseball whether it is competitive, sportsmanship, or the love for the game.  On Wednesdays I work with the adults at horsemanship for two and a half hours.  We go on different rides and teach them different skills each class and the riders really enjoy this.  I have really learned to appreciate therapeutic riding.  On Thursdays I do fitness.  We play different games and do different drills to keep them active the whole time and learn how to change and modify the activities based on their disabilities.  After this we go into the weight room and lift weights, run on the tread mill, elliptical, or use the weight machines.  We give them the skills and knowledge they need so they can do this on their own when they are not in the fitness class.  On Saturdays we bowl for about two hours.  I love this because this bowling alley has ramps that people in wheelchairs can use and participate in the bowling.  This gets everyone active and excited and has them competing against each other, but in a friendly way.  I love my job and this is how I know I am going into the right field of study.

Little Buddy

I have been observing in a preschool for the past couple of weeks and I have made "friends" with some of the children.  Its pretty rare for me to meet a child and not immidiately click with them.  This fact has made me realize that I need to mold my behavior inside the classroom.  I mean, I dont need to be their friends I just need to be a loving teacher.

Though this adjustment is a real need I think I have found one beautiful exception to the rule.  A little Autistic boy in the class has completly blindsided me by taking a liking to me.  He is not severely Autistic but I still havent heard him say an actual word.  I struggled to communicate with him at first, but I soon realized that he is alot like my little brother was when he was that age.  When I started doing some of the things I did with my brother to calm him down and make him comfortable it was like a switch was turned on and he instantly was attached to me.  I actually sat in the floor and rocked with him in my lap for about 20 minutes.  I am so glad that I have figured him  out!

This experience has definately made me sure of what im doing with my life and I cannot wait to start my career as a Preschool teacher.

Behind Closed Doors

Over this past weekend I went home to work at my first job, Foot Locker. While working there was a family that came in to buy kid shoes. This lady was being all around rude talking about her children friends. Saying how they have speech problems and their parents are stupid. Right there it turned me off and made me not want to help her. It was a mother, father, two sons, and a young girl. She brought one child a pair of shoes and some socks. The other boy became angry and asked why he didn't get any. The mother told him because she loves him more. He started crying and you could tell it was hurting him. He kept asking and by his actions he had some type of mental problem. Finally his mother brought him the cheapest pair of shoes but told him he could not get any socks. So my manager gave him a free pair. It just goes to show that we never know what goes on at home.

This goes a long with my post yesterday, but in my CDS 275 class we also just started learning about the perspectives of language development. These perspectives are so interesting to me, because it shows how every thinker thinks differently and comes to different conclusions. Also to me all of these perspectives seem partly true, some more than others, but you can't ignore one because it fits in there. The videos we observed in class yesterday were super cute, but also really interesting. They focused on different cognitive abilities and ages, there were also different ethnic groups. I think that the most accurate perspective is behavioral because I think children learn a lot about language and interaction by watching their parents and people around them. I really am loving that I am getting a double dose of these classes since they are so far aligned. It really helped me with my exam today and I can't wait to learn more.

Classes

Something that I am loving about this semester is that some of my classes are connected to each other. I am also enrolled in Intro to Communication Disorders (CDS 275) and a lot of what we are learning in there we are also learning in here. We are taking an exam tomorrow about morphemes, phonemes, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics and the structures that help us speak. This class is helping me study for this exam tomorrow, which is really neat. These language principles are the foundation of communication and are things I will have to become very familiar with if I am to succeed as a speech language pathologist. In CDS 275 we are also learning about speech production. We are learning about how the systems in the body and the structure of parts in the body help us to talk and communicate. We also learned in class about phonation, respiration, resonation, and articulation and the body parts that make those processes happen. I also have taken anatomy and that has been helping with knowing the functions of parts that some people don't know much about like the larynx and the pharynx. I love how my classes are building on each other and reinforcing what I have learned. I am excited to see what else coincides with my CDS 275 class and I am excited for the extra practice which will help me do well in class.

One Last Thing...

About me. As mentioned before I love animals, and the only thing I may love more than animals is my family. Without my family there is no doubt I would not be the person I am today. I am super family oriented, I travel home quite often to see my family, and keep in touch with them almost daily. To some that seems extreme, but I don't know what I would do if I didn't keep in such close contact. My family is my world and my support. I can tell them everything and they are another huge reason why I am in the recreational therapy field, they helped me see that was what I truly wanted to do when I was stressed about changing my major.

Animals!

To end the August blogging session (although I am 9 days or so late) a little more about me is that I love animals. Growing up I always convinced my parents to let us have pets, and now at home I have a wonderful dog (Carmel) who is a husky- golden retriever mix, a calico cat (gizmo), and my brother's red eared slider named Jeffery. At my apartment in Kentucky, I have a puppy to call my very own,his name is copper and he is a beagle dachshund mix. Copper also has a brother, my betta fish Willis. To top off my love of animals I work at Pet Smart in the Pet Care department! I am still new at the job, but learning so much. Hopefully I can incorporate some animal assisted therapy into my profession.

Preschool

John here! As I said in my last post I am an IECE major which means I will be doing a few things with my degree. First of all I could do intervention work with babies up to three years.  Secondly, I  could be a Preschool teacher.

It is pretty unusual for males to go into the field that I am going into.  No kidding, there are two guys at EKU with my major and one of them is me.  That being said I couldn't think of anything else I would rather do.

I do love working with little kids but the Interdisciplinary part of my  major is the real reason i'm going into my field.  My little brother was diagnosed with Aspergers at a young age and it has motivated me to work with kids like him ever since.  I have a real passion for kids like my brother.  I also have a little sister who is "normal" for lack of a better word. Helping raise those two kids showed me that even though one was "different" they were both kids who needed the same amount of love and attention.  I started to realize that it isn't about what they can't do, but instead it's about what they can do.  I hope to be the teacher that inspires little ones to show the world that with love for one another we can all live together as equals and I believe that it all starts in the early years.  Thats why Im going to teach preschool...to make a difference in at least one child's life.

Transferring

So far, EKU is about 32578524 times better than my previous school. Going to small Christian school is nice, but it is nothing but high school all over again. I enjoy being able to walk around and not know everybody by name and see different faces everyday, as bad as that might sound. I thought by transferring from a small school like that would be much harder to adapt to, but everything is going well so far. I really thought my class sizes here at EKU would be much larger than my previous school, but they aren't, some actually have less. All in all, EKU is treating me great so far and I hope it continues.

About Me

I grew up in Lancaster, Ky and graduated from the one and only Garrard County High School. I love to fish, hunt, and spend time with my family. I have 2 dogs, one of which is an English Bulldog (Axl), and the other is a shitzu (Tanner). I live on Herrington Lake and try to spend as much time as possible on it, whether it's fishing or just riding around. I played baseball, basketball, and football from the time I was old enough throughout high school, and even played baseball in college for 3 years at the University of the Cumberlands. I now am an assistant coach for the Centre College softball team beginning this year and I am extremely excited.

Why I Want to Teach

Growing up I always had someone pushing me academically, and that was my own mom. She has taught at the elementary and high school levels, and she is currently a 5th grade math teacher at Camp Dick Robinson Elementary. I always looked up to her and she showed me the impact that a teacher can have on student's lives and that is the main reason I want to teach. I want to be an extra role model to kids, and for some, possibly their primary role model.

Previous Class

Hi guys!

I was only present for half of class last monday. I have read through most of the chapter and what was posted on blackboard but I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to help me better understand Morphemes? That is the only part I am struggling with.

Thanks!

Observations

Before my first semester of observing, I was sure I wanted to one day teach younger elementary grades, possibly kindergarten or first grade.  As I went through my first semester in an elementary school, observing first grade, I absolutely loved it but I started to realize more and more that I wanted to teach older grades such as fourth or fifth.  This past summer I worked at a daycare in my hometown and those doubts about younger aged kids resurfaced.  I enjoy working with children of all ages but I am more certain than ever that I want to teach older elementary grades, maybe even middle school.  I believe I only found this out from experience and I am thankful I had that opportunity before it was too late.
