I work for Lexington Park and Recreation in their Therapeutic Recreation department. I work their four times a week and I absolutely love it. On Tuesdays I work with the adults with special needs playing baseball in Miracle League and our team is called the "Thunder Pucks." I absolutely enjoy this and I love seeing the different personalities that come out when they are playing baseball whether it is competitive, sportsmanship, or the love for the game. On Wednesdays I work with the adults at horsemanship for two and a half hours. We go on different rides and teach them different skills each class and the riders really enjoy this. I have really learned to appreciate therapeutic riding. On Thursdays I do fitness. We play different games and do different drills to keep them active the whole time and learn how to change and modify the activities based on their disabilities. After this we go into the weight room and lift weights, run on the tread mill, elliptical, or use the weight machines. We give them the skills and knowledge they need so they can do this on their own when they are not in the fitness class. On Saturdays we bowl for about two hours. I love this because this bowling alley has ramps that people in wheelchairs can use and participate in the bowling. This gets everyone active and excited and has them competing against each other, but in a friendly way. I love my job and this is how I know I am going into the right field of study.
