Observations
Before my first semester of observing, I was sure I wanted to one day teach younger elementary grades, possibly kindergarten or first grade. As I went through my first semester in an elementary school, observing first grade, I absolutely loved it but I started to realize more and more that I wanted to teach older grades such as fourth or fifth. This past summer I worked at a daycare in my hometown and those doubts about younger aged kids resurfaced. I enjoy working with children of all ages but I am more certain than ever that I want to teach older elementary grades, maybe even middle school. I believe I only found this out from experience and I am thankful I had that opportunity before it was too late.

It's a good thing that we get to dip our feet in before its too late. I'm sure a lot of people have had similar experiences, I know I did! I was going to do middle grade history and just one day in a middle school turned me away from that..now I'm going for the little ones.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the observations have helped direct me. I believe I want to stick with the little ones as well. I never had a desire to teach high school, but I observed a high school special education class and I had a blast. I knew I could only get one hour of credit, but I stayed for over two hours just hanging out. I know I want to teach special education, and I hope one day to be able to teach students of all ages.
